Listener Candidate for the KPFA Local Station Board
Statement
I, Barbara Whipperman, am a candidate for listener representative to the KPFA Local Station Board. As a long time listener, I care deeply about the station and its very special programming.

I'm a member of SaveKPFA, a support group of like-minded folks, drawn together to sustain and strengthen local control over our station. The Pacifica Network is also a valuable resource, but a difficult entity to govern. If elected I would hope, through the LSB, to contribute to improved communication and cooperation among all stations in the network.

As an LSB member I would put energy into revenue development outside of on-air fundraising. I have served as KPFA LSB Treasurer for almost 2 years, having been appointed by vote of the LSB, based on my professional/work experience. I would offer to continue in that capacity.

Please vote for me and the other SaveKPFA member candidates. Visit www.savekpfa.org. Thanks.

Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. In what ways is your station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?
I'm impressed with the perseverance of KPFA, its continued existence in spite of difficulties. I believe this is due to strong social pull for free speech radio, free of the influence of advertisers. It seems the best chance we have to get the truth.

The Apprenticeship Program is a positive bridge to the future through radio. It could blossom even more with increased support.
2. In what ways is your station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?
Too frequent use of combative methods to deal with disagreements or problems. I would work for and encourage the use of more efficient, cooperative structures.
3. What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station’s mission?
I have served as the KPFA LSB Treasurer for almost 2 years, having been appointed by vote of the LSB, based on my professional/work experience. I would continue to offer these skills to the LSB.
4. What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?
Put energy into revenue development outside of on-air fundraising. Work towards solving network related losses in economically efficient and fair ways.
