KPFK Listener Candidate: Reza Pour
As a past board member of this radio station I am well acquainted with the demands and requirements of this position. As a community organizer I have deep connections with many underserved communities who are needed by us to support this station as they need this station to open its airwaves to their stories and experiences.
As your elected board member I would support greater dialogue both on air and in streets between board members and the listeners from every corner of Southern California to ensure that this great media outlet is available and known to the hundreds of thousands who reside in out listening range.
I would work to bring back to KPFK its own news department with a strong corps of stringers from the various communities addressing local needs as the Pacifica Mission Statement says: “to promote the full distribution of public information; to obtain access to employ such varied sources in the public presentation of accurate, objective, comprehensive news on a matters vitally affecting with community.”
I believe that management must foster an atmosphere of collaboration with board members so we can work together for the improvement of KPFK. The board members must be embedded in the social fabric of community and also be available to serve and support the daily endeavors of those who are creating programming, both paid and unpaid staff. I would work toward greater support and recognition of the over 100 unpaid staff who dedicated their passion and their time toward creating diverse and quality broadcasts that inspire and educate.
The social, political, and financial activities of the station must always reflect the best interest of listeners. That is why I would help the station to maximize its capacity to serve not only as a venue for listeners’ involvement, but as a means to serve out many underserved communities. I would seek to expand KPFK events in which the management, together with community activists and other organizations, would be able disseminate information, to collaborate, and simply to get a chance to be acquainted with each other.
As a member of the Grassroots Community Radio Coalition I am running with others who stand together in support of unions and workers’ rights, for peace with justice, for immigrant rights, for the rights of mother earth, and for gender equity. I believe in the solidarity and diversity of our communities including multigenerational and multi-lingual voices on our airwaves, online, and in social media, and I support more collectively produced programs and news from our own local communities.
