The Local Election Supervisor has determined that this candidate violated the Fair Campaign Provisions. Details of the original violation can be read here and the NES’ update can be read here.

I am Deborah Shafto and I am running for the board because I believe that now, more than ever, we need an effective way to communicate news and events to the progressive community. Radio (KPFT) can provide inter-group communication, support, news and event coordination essential to progressive action. KPFT needs a board that can work with management and perform necessary tasks.

I have been a member since the take-back, and served as the interim committee chair until the bylaws were written and elections were held. I organized the first ARDC, the first outreach committee and the first bylaws revision committee. I am a hard working volunteer and I want to contribute to finding solutions in these critical and difficult financial times.

Optional Questions

In what ways are the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?
One of the most important issues at this time is establishing a sound financial basis for operations. KPFT has been operating on a tight budget for many years. I do not believe that we have either excess personnel or expenditures.
We need to explore new resources while bearing in mind our commitment to not being obligated to commercial interests.

In what ways are the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?
No Response.

What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station’s mission?
I have served on nearly every committee in Pacifica and am able to work cooperatively and productively with people who do not share my convictions. I am a hard worker and a problem solver.

What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?
This is the most important issue in front of us. Because the population does not have the resources it once had, it may be necessary to seek grants for the important work we do, as long as we are careful to not allow ourselves or our programing to be influenced by commercial interests.
