My name’s Yuri Gottesman and I’m a KPFA listener running for the local station board to help ensure KPFA’s long-term viability as a place for radical, community radio. With many years experience as a Union organizer and Union attorney, I believe I bring a skill set and energy that can have a positive effect on the station.

In 2001 I started listening to KPFA and was immediately drawn to the news reporting that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I was saddened, angered, and inspired by the brave reporting on many issues, and in particular on the reporting of Occupied Palestine, which led me to the West Bank to support non-violent resistance on the ground.

Programming like UpFront and Letters & Politics continue to inspire and educate me. But how do we ensure KPFA’s ability to continue offering this type of programming to the Bay Area and beyond? I imagine that three things will help: 1) increase membership and funding by continuing to appeal to a diverse audience from around the Bay Area 2) listen to and support, rather than fight against, KPFA’s incredible staff and volunteers, who do such an amazing job with limited resources; and 3) minimize infighting to foster a collaborative tone in KPFA’s leadership.

As part of the SaveKPFA slate, I believe that as a community, we should support powerful, well-done radio, free of corporate money and influence. Please vote for me and the rest of the SaveKPFA slate (www.saveKPFA.org) so that we can do whatever it takes to help maintain and foster such a vital resource! Thanks for reading.

Optional Questions

In what ways are the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?
KPFA continues to offer reliable, radical programming that is simply not available anywhere else. The station has hired leadership that, in my view, has made positive changes. I’m so glad that the days of hiring union-busting lawyers are over, and hope to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future!

In what ways are the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?
KPFA needs to increase membership and decrease infighting. I’m not positive on how to achieve the former, but I believe that my skills in collaboration can help decrease conflict.

What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station's mission?
I bring a calm demeanor, rational thinking, and an ability to bring people together. I’ve done a myriad of things in my professional life, from organizing Unions to advocating for them as an attorney to running a small business teaching test preparation to adults, all of which has helped me deal with varying points of view to get things done.

What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?
I think we either need to expand membership, increase the level of support from existing members, or both! Some staff and volunteers are better at fundraising than others. Perhaps we could learn from those that are already very successful at fundraising (both within and outside of KPFA) to expand their skills throughout fund drives, without, of course, seeking money from corporations.

So, what do you think ?
