Our Blog

I am a public health research scientist (pathobiologist) and long-time political activist. I would like to serve on the LSB of KPFK because this listener-supported station is the beacon of progressive hope in the Los Angeles area, and a significant part of the nationwide Pacifica Network. I would be honored to work with the Board on the primary tasks of preserving this precious local resource while simultaneously promoting non-violence, and social, economic and environmental justice everywhere.

My skills include working in committees to reach consensus, and scientific evaluation and editing regarding public health issues, particularly environmental health and toxicology. Professionally, I have worked nationwide [mostly with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the New York State Dept. of Health], and in South Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Western Europe [with the Johns Hopkins University International Center for Medical Research, World Health Organization (WHO), and others].

My involvement with progressive political organizations includes: ACLU; American Friends Service Committee (AFSC); Americans for Democratic Action/SoCal (Board Member); Amnesty International; Common Cause; Conscientious Consumers Bulletin (Co-editor); Greenpeace; Money Out/Voters In (MOVI); Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC); Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR); The Poor People’s Campaign; Student Mobilization Committee to End War in S.E. Asia; Topanga Peace Alliance; Union of Concerned Scientists; and War Resisters League (WRL). I have volunteered for several years with a Beverly Hills “soup kitchen” to provide nutrition, as well as friendship and a safe, secure meeting place for our “neighbors in need”.

Optional Questions (push the plus sign to see the answers)

In what ways are the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?
I’d like to see a continuation of maximizing current events and expanding local news. Programs that I favor include: Thom Hartmann; Ralph Nader Hour; Solartopia/Harvey Wasserman; Richard Wolff; Margaret Prescott;Letters & Politics/Mitch Jeserich; World Focus/Blase Bompane; Connect the Dots/Lila Garrett. I also would want to preserve arts programming such as: L.A. Theater Works; and, Reggae Central/Chuck Foster

In what ways are the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?
No response.

What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station’s mission?
Scientific evaluation and editing skills as needed. Also, I have been a member of many organizations that have required deep discussion, compromise, and reaching agreement that all could support.

What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?
Grants, major donor programs, fund-raising events, and, very importantly, transparent accurate bookkeeping that would allow KPFK to regain funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
