Our Blog

Hi, my name is John Vollbrecht and I live in Santa Monica. I am a retired contractor–homes, not arms.

My father, John Sr. was instrumental in organizing Democrats for Eugene McCarthy, that influenced me to become a war protester at an early age.

My community involvement began with Dr. Linda Velasquez and the “Eagle Rock Committee for Survival” walking door-to-door to gather signatures for a “Bi-lateral Nuclear Freeze.” I continued that walk later as a member of South Pasadena’s Neighbors for Peace and Justice, marching in parades, participating in peace vigils.

I live in Santa Monica now and for the past 10 years I have been an Elections Inspector for LA County Registrar of Voters. While no longer involved in party politics, I remain a vigilant voice for the environment and 4 years, a member of 911 Truth, Los Angeles. I remain a friend and fan of radio host Cary Harrison.

I have roots in Pasadena and the Northeast, where I was somewhat involved in Democratic politics. As Founder and past President of the Democratic Club of the Pasadena Foothills as well as past President of the Northeast Democratic Club, I had my plate full… as well as running for office.

As a member of the LACDCC and the CDP, for many years, I helped Co-chair the Environmental Committee. Besides fighting the Chevron/Goleta pipeline and working with the community to bring about the METRO Gold Line, another accomplishment was as President of Action Now, an environmental-educational/activist group. With the help of many others, we brought an end to the aerial spraying of Malathion on the people of LA. Our work continues today fighting aerosol spraying and geo-engineering of the air currents, and the “aluminizing” of our airwaves.

I would like to serve the community as a member of the LSB. My first inkling of serving in this capacity began in the 80s with KPFK and then Air America. ( A great idea, but then look what happened!)

I see the same scenario for KPFK– Your vote will help us put the SIZZLE back into KPFK! STOP the DRIZZLE. JOIN the SIZZLE. Please save one of your votes for John Vollbrecht, LSB, KPFK.

Optional Questions (push the plus sign to see the answers)

In what ways are the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?
The station is fiercely independent and very Inclusive and judging from the numerous applicants for LSB, still a strong and recognized voice in the community. It attracts and has many, many great show personalities and pledge workers.

In what ways are the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?
I think there is, believe it or not, too much music. Seriously. Los Angeles is the mecca for Music. We have more
music (of all kinds) and music outlets than any where else in the United States. Save the music for bumper music and let’s stay with the issues.

What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station's mission?
I have only heard rumors as to how LSB meetings transpire and are conducted.
One of my fortes is keeping a meeting on track, on time, on agenda– and civil.
Contentious mtgs accomplish little and no one voice should dominate. Really.

What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?
Small donations of help and money.

So, what do you think ?
