Our Blog

I am a Hypnotherapist with several Energy Medicine techniques, and a specialty in extreme trauma release of adult and childhood events and issues. My cases have included Domestic Violence, Chronic Pain, PTSD, and Rape Crises. Homeostasis and peace are achieved.

My major KPFK interests are the un-censoring of our programming to get more listeners; the complete restoration of the Local News Broadcast; and creating novel ways of fund-raising to solve our constant revenue shortage, forcing continual fund-drives, driving our listeners away, constituting a “KPFK Death-Spiral”.

This loss of listeners and members can only be caused by increasingly irrelevant KPFK programming, since KPCC has increased its listenership during this time, so we should examine their content to see if we should cover these topics.

Un-censoring our programming is crucial for restoring our lost listeners. Fewer listeners decreases our fund-drive revenues, meaning we must fund-drive for more days per year, now up to 95 budgeted days this fiscal year (more than 25% of the year), up from 30 days per year a few years ago.

In contrast, George Nouri on KFI gets 10 Million listeners per night, which is more than a 1000 times more per night. Nouri covers subjects that KPFK never covers (except during fund-drives, when we need money from our listeners). Nouri’s subjects include Alternative Health information, such as KPFK provides by Gary Null, but only at night. He also covers UFOs and ETs, which more than half of Americans have seen, or believe in.

We could increase our listeners by hundreds of times, and thus decrease our interminable fund-drives proportionally, by simply un-censoring our programming, and covering these forbidden topics all year long.

We should create a Spanish-only second channel to more fully serve Spanish speaking Listeners, and free up the Evening hours for the now-censored topics to be broadcast in English.

KPFK has not had a Local News Broadcast, since Sean Heitkemper, then GM, laid off most of the news department “for just a few months until we get through our current crisis”. That was eight years ago. Since then, Management has hired other people, but has not replaced the News Department personnel, leaving KPFK neutralized as a news source. We need to restore the entire News Department to serve our listeners.

I suggest that KPFK raise money by record musical artists in our Studio A, and selling the recordings as premiums sharing the profits equally;

Optional Questions (push the plus sign to see the answers)

In what ways are the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?
The station has begun improving Studio A to add a control room for recording live music. This will enable progressively minded musicians who share the vision of the Pacifica Mission to record live music to be used as KPFK-exclusive Fund-Drive Premiums. This music can also to be continually promoted and sold by the KPFK website 24/7 year round. The key idea here is for KPFK to produce exclusive premiums and recordings at near zero cost, to be promoted by KPFK both on-air and on the website, with the profits shared equally between the station and the musicians.

LA is filled with progressively minded musicians who would support this and similar endeavors.

Famous musican friends of KPFK include Jackson Brown, Ry Cooder, John Densmore, Ozo Motli, and La Santa Cecilia. KPFK merely has to ask them to help us with their music.

In what ways are the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?
The station is increasing the proportion of Spanish language programming, which benefits only the older Spanish-speaking listeners who are too old or busy to learn English. The young learn English rapidly, so do not need this Spanish programming, and the future of KPFK belongs to the young, not to the old.

Spanish language programming drives away listeners who do not know Spanish.

High Definition Radio provides us the answer, eliminating the need to choose Spanish or English at a particular time of day. This is to provide continuous programming in both languages at the same time. HD Radio provides us with FOUR sub-channels at the same time, just as TV Channel 28 KCET does. KCET has 28-1, 28-2, 28-3, and 28-4. One is English only, another is Spanish only.

We should hold a dedicated fund drive to raise the required $50,000 to add the digital HD capability to our transmitter.
HD radios are available for as low as 50 dollars, and should be provided as premiums for our regular fund drives, and perhaps sold at cost from our website’s online store.

What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station's mission?

What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?
Ideas for Helping the Station and Pacifica.

Have the board write policy that mandates minimal programming coverage of Pacifica-Mission-relevant topics that are not now adequately covered, and which draw many listeners to other stations.

Programmers write brief abstracts and lists of keywords that can be put on the web for Google to index so that Google searches will produce our links to our radio programs, which should from now on be kept on our free archives forever going forward. Include brief pitches at the end of each program asking for listeners to donate if they liked the program, plus links to our KPFK Voting-Member recruitment section of our website, which needs to be upgraded.

Please also support my fellow candidates. We are Steve Kaiser, John Vollbrecht, Bruce Caukin, and Liberty Lightfoot.
