KPFK Listener Candidate: Marylin Herbert
I am a listener of KPFK interested in a great radio station that is unique, different and challenges the listener with engaging topics. I very interested in un-censoring programming as that is what I believe listeners come to this station for as opposed to other stations.
I learned about government and governance by being a student Senator all through high school and college. I attended the University of Florida on a partial scholarship. I was very interested in science research, and won a Century III leader award for grades and social activities of being a forward thinker.
It is time for KPFK to update and go digital. We can fit four digital stations into the bandwidth of one analog station, the one we have now. Estimated cost is about 50K. We could have our normal English station, plus a 24 hour Spanish station, plus two more signals, with perhaps one for youth programming, and one for special projects programming. Having three more stations means more listeners and more revenue streams. That is an amazing opportunity to increase our listeners, thus our income, thus our money for more projects.
I am for adding digital TV onto the Internet. Advertising will help with costs. Sonali at 8 AM M-F already is doing this. How about extending this to the rest of the programs? I could contact some of the producers I know that could possibly want to partner with KPFK in joint projects. We could use our audio signal to help promote both our other signals and our Internet channel, or perhaps channels. Expand the volunteer intern staff to focus on raising money and calling old and new sponsors.
I work in film distribution for a distribution company where I watch many documentaries on various topics: UFO’s, Alternative Health, Vaccines, 911, water, Oil, Meat, etc. I could facilitate public affairs programmers inviting some of the filmmakers to participate on the shows. These filmmakers spend years and years to research their subject and interview experts.
My expertise in social media having created over 50 groups each on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google + to help people to find jobs and create WHAT. I can help promote programs from KPFK to those groups and attract new listeners, or remind listeners the station has new wonderful programs listen to. My Film & TV network group has over 15,000 members. My Bridal bloggers has over 8,000 bloggers.
I created Dog Rescue Los Angeles where 600 members post dogs from LA Shelters who need homes. I’d love and encourage that KPFK lists a dog an hour and places it on the webpage to get adopted. People love animals and a public radio station that features local pets from shelters would attract new listeners and make renewing members feel great.
I am very interested in getting the recording studio made that the studio received funds for. I’d like to see local music artist hour to help discover California artist and find the next Beach Boys.
