Staff Candidate for the KPFA Local Station Board
I'm a general assignment reporter at kpfa radio for the past three years, and I'm running for election for the Local Station Board because I want to contribute to helping the station flourish. My foundation for reporting is from KPFA's news training/internship and advanced radio journalism workshop. It was my intent to participate in making media that matters. This mission called to me after my experiences living in New Orleans leading up to, during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. When I returned to California , I found that it was KPFA talking about issues of poverty, neglect, corruption, and bureaucratic incompetence versus the spectacle that was presented in mainstream media. I became an avid listener of the station and subsequently, a staff member. I think that I would be an effective representative of the staff to the Board as I believe that one of KPFA's strengths is as an incubator for people to acquire and grow media skills. I have led training workshops for the apprenticeship program and have assisted news interns in becoming oriented. I have a professional background in communications and marketing for non-profits and a government agency and have developed extensive local, regional and national outreach initiatives. I have also assisted fundraising planning and cultivation efforts. I am solution-focused, resourceful and possess a positive, upbeat outlook. Electing me will help the Board be the backbone for the station providing strategic framework and support for the outstanding work that's done at the station on a daily basis.
