Listener Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Current challenges no longer adhere to the binary perception humans have often defaulted to. Inclusivity as well as deliberate and compassionate and influential communication needs to be the focus. If we can bring change to our local communities, with real people and real stories, facts and not beliefs, that are inclusive, deliberate and compassionate we can become the relevant foundation we have the potential to be. Thus becoming relevant airwaves of change and improvement. All I can pledge is my hard work and inclusive communication to continue the Pacifica Foundation mission for future generations. Nice to meet you...I look forward to collaborating with you...I am VB.
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
As a member of an academic campus, facilitating discussions that focus around providing solutions to local and global issues related to Sustainability, inclusive communication has been a crucial skill and one I would like to strengthen between all KPFK stakeholders, current and potential. I have also had the opportunity to participate in the KPFK Outreach Committee, since the EcoSocialist Conference that took place in 2018. This has provided some insight into the station and the goal is to connect students with the KPFK mission for community action.
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
The mission statement and the desire to be part of the local community.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
Efficiency and relevance: The Station has the potential to acquire an audience that appreciates the values highlighted within the Pacifica Foundation’s Mission Statement. Regarding relevance, local News is pivotal to our communities in our signal area. In fact, while we need not compete with commercial news outlets, our urgency must be focused on attention capture content – thus, further strengthening bonds between the station's potential and the local communities.
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
To assist in upholding the core values stated in the Pacifica Mission Statement.
To assist in prioritizing the top issues with reasonable timelines for progress and to communicate this progress to our listening communities.
To assist in making the station relevant to our listening communities – both current and potential.
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
Sustainability both financial and environmental need a constant cost/benefits analysis and reiterative evaluation. This would be a top priority in order to plan, budget, forecast and execute the station's future. Transparency and input from the relevant communities also to be included.
6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
KPFK has unimaginable potential, especially amidst current challenges. However, action/change/union must happen for KPFK to become the local, nonbiased resource-that-results-in-tangible-improvement we all need with our daily beverage of choice.
