Listener Candidate for the WBAI Local Station Board
Statement
Hello,

My name is Claudette Robertson and I am very, very interested in becoming a WBAI Board Member.

I have been an avid listener of WBAI for many years. The information I gathered from the station has always been useful and attributed greatly to my knowledge base. Information that I did not hear on other radio stations and information that informed my political and cultural decision making process.

I listened to WBAI many mornings on my way to work as a teacher and during that time many of the topics were of such an important nature that I would share the information with my students upon my arrival to class by incorporating it into my lesson for the day. Something my students found both interesting, informative and, to be honest, sometimes shocking.

In recent years although I was not able to listen to WBAI as much as I liked because my schedule as a high school assistant principal did not allow for that but whenever I had the opportunity to listen to Amy Goodman on public television I did. And still I found that the information I learned from her show, I was able to bring it to the students in my school. Information that would have a direct impact on their future, yet, information they probably would not be aware of if it were not for WBAI. I remember how I used to encourage my students to listen to WBAI and often times I have them an assignment that required them to listen to the station.

One of the things I am very passionate about is giving back to the community. I always felt that it was so important to do that. I even emphasized the importance of giving back to the community to my children and today the work they do and I tend to do reflects that very concept.

Mostly everything I do emanates from the concept of giving back. I always felt like I could never fully enjoy my happiness in life without making and/or feeling the joy I feel to see another person smile along the way.

As the owner of a bicycle store in Brooklyn, I am able to give back to the community through donations and gentle offerings, which I feel is such an integral part of being a business owner. The fact that I am in a position to do that gives me such gratitude.

As a playwright and a poetess, I am able to educate and inform a variety of people because if provides a forum that brings diverse groups of individuals together at the same time. Many who are not aware of the various issues that plague their community and surrounding areas.

I am very grateful to Ms. Bette Davis and Mr. Ralph Poynter for recommending that I become a candidate for Board Member on WBAI. I am very grateful to have this opportunity and participate in this process and I hope that I am selected.

Kindly,
Claudette Robertson
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
As a teacher, I always believed in effectuating change so the skills that I bring are being a team player, knowing how to effectuate necessary change and using the platform to inform and hopefully educate.
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
I appreciate and value that WBAI has always provided a platform where you can hear cultural information and information that is not heard in many other stations.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
At present I do not have anything in particular that I would like to see changed other than the fact that I want to see WBAI remain on Air.
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
Providing needed Information, to communities that they are not aware of and do not hear on the radio. Outreach is another focus. There are so many great things going on in many underserved communities and I feel like too often it goes unnoticed and unrecognized so I would like to see some light shed on these great things going on in these communities. Lastly, I would like to focus on ways to provide a platform where people can inform, learn, share and grow together..
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
Fundraising is a key factor in sustainability. However, I also think donations play an integral role as well. The key to both receiving funds and donations is making communities feel like they can trust and rely on the source they are funding or donating to. People have to trust that their contributions are being made to a source that they trust and rely on to use them in such a way that inspires them to want to fight to keep the station on because it provides the information, the resources and the platform that helps their listening audience.
6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
My inspiration for becoming a board member emanates from my passion for community outreach and giving back to the community. I feel that there is no better platform in which to do it.
