Listener Candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board
Statement
My name is Deidra Bynum and I live in Los Angeles, California. I am an active member of my community as an a participant in some activist causes and also currently a volunteer in the SoCal faction "US hands off Cuba" group.

I am also a mother to a "gen Z" and have seen just how negative commercialization can be, whether online or on the radio. I see our education system failing to enrich young minds, and Ive watched attacks on free and/or unbiased media. These things specifically have greatly influenced my decision to get involved with KPFK as a contributor and now as a candidate. I have only been a KPFK listener for some 5 or so years but in that time have appreciated it as a station over any others. Over the last year it became increasing clear that KPFK was under attack and that I was enjoying lots of free and important content so it was time to give back so I became a monthly donor. Today, I am running for a board seat for the possible honor of assisting to keep this wonderful station "alive and well", not simply "afloat". I will do my best here and try my hardest either apart of the 12 reps or just as a continued listener. Hopefully we can make a positive influence on he life extension of this station and its various broadcasts without drastic changes to is platform or corporatism take over.
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
As a active member in my community I have a direct line of communication with listeners of KPFK from varying backgrounds and experiences. This gives me a great opportunity to communicate their thoughts, feelings and requests directly to the station which is vital for knowing which decisions will benefit the audience most.
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
I appreciate that the station has been working tirelessly for over 60 years to bring honesty, perspective and unbiased information to the masses with broad coverage from a multitude of individuals. It is the last safe heaven for broadcasts without limitations by corporatism.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
Id like to see more attention given to climate change and environmental needs as this is a very important and pertinent issue affecting us all with quickening pace.I would also like to ensure the station retains, and to some degree, improve its diversity in our radio announcers as the station had recently lost some diverse voices in the latest change up.
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
Reallocation of funds to appropriate means
Increasing appeal for segments dedicated to climate issues
Increasing diversity in segments and respective announcers
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
Consistent updates and re-accessing of expenditures along with increased/improved fund raisers could be helpful in securing finances and appropriate usage of funds.
6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
This is my first time running for anything. I may not be the most well polished or charismatic character out of the group running, but I do have something in common with all of those running which makes me a contender; dedication I am running because I appreciate this station and people behind the scenes making it work. And that this stations future and of of its many employees and volunteers is under threat I have to try to take action. It would be my honor to give back to the station I have enjoyed for years and do just a little more for my community as best as I can.
