Staff Candidate for the KPFA Local Station Board
Statement
I’m running for the KPFA board to support our station, its incredible staff and programming. I want to make sure that the programming stays true to the Pacifica mission, which is to promote a better understanding among people through dialogue and culture. I will do all I can to insure that the Pacifica Foundation will recognize and support the greatness of KPFA, its programming and staff. I seek to protect the KPFA staff , our building, management team and independent programming. I hope to identify and attract people to the station who have media, management and financial skills. I am a former board member, former Chair of the PNB, and currently work as a criminal defense attorney. Please VOTE for me and our KPFA Protectors candidates.
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
I am a host, producer of the Sunday Classics show. I appreciate connecting with the community through my show sharing inspiring music to nourish us in these challenging times. I have a deep understanding of the legal, broadcasting and management challenges we face in light of what I believe to be the Pacifica National Board mismanagement.
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
I appreciate KPFA’s diverse management team, the upgrading of technology at the station and providing training and support for in home studios. I appreciate a diverse grid and the many programmers, hosts, technicians, engineers, and other support staff keeping KPFA on the air and generating financial support.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
I would like to see training programs for staff at all Pacifica stations to help them become financially self sustaining.
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
I would like to see governance changes to give KPFA an actual representative voice in the network. We need stations like KPFA with 15,000 members to have more directors on the national board than stations with less than 4 thousand. We also need more media, outreach and fund raising skills from our board members. We need to address the mismanagement of Pacifica’s that resulted KPFA’s assets being grabbed to fund other Pacifica stations.
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
We need proper management of staff pensions, and elimination of nonstandard accounting practices that transfer KPFA assets to Pacifica. I want to help staff and listeners understand that KPFA is the only station in the network fully paying our bills and Pacifica obligations. We want KPFA donations to be used for KPFA and not for low listener stations that refuse to improve their programming.
6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
Please vote for me when you get your staff ballot in August.
