Listener Candidate for the WPFW Local Station Board
I’m running for the WPFW Local Station Board to support our station, its staff and well produced community programming at this urgent time. I want to make sure that what goes on the air stays true to the Pacifica mission, which is to promote a better understanding among people through dialogue and culture. I will do all I can to insure that the Pacifica Foundation supports the staff of WPFW and is responsive to the interests of the listeners as all independent medias sources face serious financial challenges. I especially seek to expand WPFW news and to help it to become a full news department. I hope to improve listenership and attract people to the station and network who have media, management and financial skills. I am a long time, hard working supporter of WPFW and I’m asking for you vote. Thank you
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
I am a retired Fire Fighter and I work for the International Association of Fire Fighters. I am involved with health and safety support for fire fighters and their families. I bring strong administrative and community building skills to this work. I believe we must prepare our stations to serve the listeners with emergency community support as climate emergency accelerates. I have a deep understanding of the legal, broadcasting and management challenges we face in light of what I believe to be the Pacifica National Board mismanagement.
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
I appreciate the powerful jazz and justice programming at WPFW and the programmers, hosts, technicians, engineers, and other support staff keeping WPFW on the air and I appreciate the Listener Members for their financial support.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
I would like to see more training programs available to WPFW staff and for all Pacifica staff. We also need to address the mismanagement of Pacifica’s national board that has resulted in failures to fund pensions appropriately, loss of grant money, name change irregularities and use of questionable premiums.
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
I would like to see governance changes to give the listeners, staff and affiliates the possibility of directly electing the directors to the Pacifica National Board where the important decisions are made instead of through the small group control of local boards.
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
I want WPFW donations to be used for WPFW.
6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
Please vote for me when you get your staff ballot in August.
