I am Vaniecia J. Williams, a second-term Listener Candidate, for the Board of Directors at KPFT radio. I am very humbled to have this opportunity, once again, in a city I was born and raised in. Non-profit radio has been the foundation of my professional career since I was a freshman in college at KUSF AM, San Francisco, California.
My knowledge of Pacifica Radio came about as the Executive Producer of Youth Radio at KPFA & KPFB in Berkeley, California back in 1992. Yes back in 1992 there was a KPFB.
As you may have picked up on, I am a career media professional. A native Houstonian, I graduated as an undergrad from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor’s in Media Communications. Also, upon returning home after a 15-year stint in California, I graduated from Texas Southern University with a masters’ degree in Telecommunications. Along the way I have taken many professional development courses in media and education, and have been tutored and coached by some of the best in the business like Lucille Bliss, the original voice of Smurfette.
I produced and engineered shows for KUSF while in college, before working at KSFX and KYA radio in San Francisco. I then took a position in the News & Current Affairs department at KQED TV (PBS). While there I not only produced and managed the department, I also produced shows for the radio side, KQED FM.
You can get a glimpse of my writing through my blog at: www.thestraightofit.blogspot.com. This site serves as my mini portfolio. I am also on twitter/instagram @NiecieW and @NieciePR which is only on twitter; and on facebook as Niecie Williams.
Currently, I am a media executive and an educator, still freelancing around the country through my media and public relations company Niecie Communications, affectionately known as NieciePR. I am also on the books as a teacher for the Houston Independent School District, specializing in courses in English and Journalism.
What can I bring to your board? I can bring to the board a wealth of creativity, brand marketing, fundraising (I was taught by the best: PBS), and the overall understanding of the operations of a radio station, and the skill to run any department, although production and news are my specialties. As stated above, I am very humbled and excited to become a second-term board member of KPFT.
