Listener Candidate
for the KPFK Local Station Board
We are living in very troubling times. We are living in a world where Climate Change catastrophes are becoming increasingly destructive. A world where Fascism is running freely and growing racism infecting our communities. Where Police have found a way to kill POC, black and brown youth in particularly, with absolutely no accountability. A country where its becoming popular to separate families, incarcerate children in cages, allow people to die merely for fleeing persecution. The voice that we all counted on to speak truth to power has become eerily silent and has become a parrot echoing propaganda of the mainstream media. The one place in radio I used to turn to for clarity and common sense has lost it's way. I was ready to run away, find somewhere else to turn to but my friends from Grassroots Community Radio Coalition convinced me to fight instead. To fix the damage done to KPFK by running for a seat on our Local Station Board. The current majority on the LSB has experimented and failed these last few years to the detriment of our community. No more. Enough is Enough! Let's get back to our roots. Let's find our way back to that vision of the Pacifica Foundation. A voice of, by, and for the People! I'm Rick and I'm running for a seat with GCRC to save our station. Please vote for us
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
I have held a seat on the LSB as an alternate a few years back. I'm an activist and organizer in my community and I'm passionate about returning to our roots
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
I appreciate voices of color in our local communities, Spanish programming, world music, and straight edge reporting that is often being silenced.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
I would like to see a change in the morning and afternoon drive time programming that more reflects our communities and scale back shows that mimic the MSM. An increase in FAIR and Spanish reporting to the morning drive time. More transparency for the listenership utilizing Social Media platforms
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
Increasing Listener/Sponsorship, bringing Grassroots programming back, save and expand Spanish programming
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
By utilizing the tools available to expand listenership through social media and tapping into our communities for the stories directly impacting them
6. Is there anything else you would like prospective voters to know?
I've been a listener/sponsor for about 20 years. Over the course of the last year or two I've been losing interest in my station as it has stopped representing the people. Either we run away and allow it to get worse or we fight to take back our station. If you feel the same way please vote for me and all our compatriots in the struggle for truth and justice, the Grassroots Community Radio Coalition. Thank you
