Listener Candidate
for the KPFT Local Station Board
It is an honor and privilege to place my name into nomination for the KPFT Board. Houston has been my home since 1980 and the station has been a very important part of the community and how I inform myself. I have been a listener, member, volunteer and supporter of the station from the time I first tuned in. The programming opened up a whole new world of diverse information, cultures, human experiences, injustices and just plain ordinary experiences that were previously unknown to me. The service provided to the community is invaluable. The way the station funds itself, by not taking any corporation money is fantastic.

As a board member I would do my best to objectively look at issues confronting the station and try to come up with positive ways to move past those issues and make the station a success. My background is in Information Technology infrastructure and cyber-security but I have many hobbies and interest including Permaculture, nature, social and economic justice, and making sure everyone can vote. As a Quaker, I pay attention to the testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship in all things and value all people just as they are.
Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
1. What experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the local station board to advance the station's mission?
Ten years of experience on the board of a small non-profit organization. I have many connections in the community with various organizations. I have the ability to see the big picture while paying attention to the detail. The station mission is accomplished by the smaller things being put in place that work toward the overall goals.
2. What do you appreciate and value in the station's current operations?
I appreciate the diversity and inclusivity of the staff and programming.
3. What would you like to see improved or changed in the station's current operations?
I do not have any pre-conceived agenda as to what if any changes might need to be made. I would learn about the current operations, ask questions and see if there are ways to make improvements at that point.
4. Describe what you anticipate would be your top three priorities or areas of focus if you were elected to the local station board.
  1) Meet and get to know all the station personnel and board members, etc. 2) Learn about all aspects of the stations workings, issues and concerns and 3) Work with the organization to advance or resolve challenges in a positive way.
5. Sustainability is an important part of any nonprofit operation. What are your thoughts on how the board can help to improve the station's financial footing?
Recurring income from sustaining members is desired over depending on large intermittent donations and may already be well developed but if not that would be a suggestion along with pursuing legacy giving.
