Marylin Cavanaugh – KPFK – Candidate for LSB Staff and Volunteer Team Member Representative

My name is Dr. Marylin Cavanaugh, PhD in Education. I am a transgender woman, a volunteer producer and host of Revolución Arcoíris on KPFK, and a candidate for Paid Staff and Volunteer Team Representative on the KPFK Local Station Board. My academic background, together with my lived experience as a transgender woman and my work in education, community leadership, radio production, and human rights advocacy, has given me a broad perspective on the vital role that public media plays in promoting civic participation, Inclusion, education, and social transformation.

KPFK occupies a unique place in Southern California. As part of Pacifica, it provides independent media, educational programming, cultural expression, and opportunities for civic participation that are increasingly important in today’s media environment. I believe that preserving and strengthening that mission requires active participation from volunteers, producers, staff, listeners, and community members.

If elected, I will work to strengthen communication between station leadership, volunteers, programmers, and listeners. I support expanding outreach efforts, encouraging community participation, supporting fundraising and sustainability, and promoting a culture of mutual respect and constructive engagement.

I also believe KPFK should continue to reflect the rich diversity of Southern California. Our station is strongest when different communities, cultures, languages, and perspectives are welcomed and represented. Inclusive participation strengthens Pacifica’s mission and helps ensure that independent media remains accessible and relevant to future generations.

My goal is not to represent only one group, but to help build bridges among the many communities that make KPFK a vital public resource. I believe that through collaboration, transparency, and community engagement, we can strengthen KPFK and help ensure a vibrant future for listener-sponsored independent media.

I respectfully ask for your support and your vote.
